10 New Features Coming to Twitter in 2021

Twitter is completing its 15 years, and it still has a lot in its box to unbox. Twitter is an ultimate source of viral trends, jokes, and news, depending on how you want to use this social media giant and who you follow.

It has always been a top-notch place to deliver customer service for marketers and is vital to increasing engagement of the overall marketing puzzle.

Here are some of the newest features that are coming to Twitter this year. Read and enjoy!

The ‘Communities’ feature

The social media platform is working on a feature named ‘Communities’ that will allow users to create user hubs based on locations and common interests. This will help users build communities of like-minded people to interact with other people with shared interests, share new information, and discuss common topics. Hearing this out, you might be feeling that this is pretty similar to the ‘Group’ feature of Facebook.

The ‘Super Follows’ feature

This is one feature that will delight you up if you are a die-hard fan of a Twitter celebrity or personality. You can super follow them, and you will be rewarded with some extra perks from them!

This feature will also allow users to give a paid ‘super follow’ to a Twitter account and become a member of ‘THE EXCLUSIVE COMMUNITY’.

When you super follow someone, you will be able to –

  • Receive subscriber-only newsletters
  • Gain a ‘Supporter’ badge
  • Join subscriber-only conversations
  • Get exclusive content from the profile

‘The Safety Mode’

Twitter is planning to roll out a ‘Safety Mode’ pretty soon for user-safety purposes on its platform. The Safety Mode will be available as a toggle button inside the settings tab of Twitter.

Business Profiles

Just like Facebook, Twitter is also planning to launch ‘Business Profiles’ on its platform. This essentially means that once this feature is out, different types of profiles will have different properties. The Business profiles of Twitter will provide relevant info such as opening times of the business, location or address, etc.

Twitter is preparing to re-launch verification.

A status symbol that’s highly sought-after by many users on Twitter is the blue checkmark. And soon, people will be getting another chance to apply for the much-coveted blue checkmark.

But you should not hold your breath if you are unsure that your Twitter account won’t qualify. The reason is that the verification process is rather very strict, and the announcement of the upcoming verification drive came after the social media giant removed blue checkmarks from the accounts that were either incomplete or inactive (as per its updated verification policy).

You can get verified if your account belongs to one of the following categories –

  • Organizers, Activists, and other influential people
  • Sports
  • Entertainment
  • News
  • Non-profit organizations, brands, and companies
  • Government

So, if you have been waiting for that blue mark to lit up your Twitter account, then Twitter might fulfill that wish. But if your Twitter account is incomplete as per its verification policy, be ready to get disappointed yet again!

Twitter has acquired the Podcast App and is planning to improve Clubhouse rival.

Twitter’s recent moves signify that it is becoming more serious about audio-based concepts.

At the end of last year, Twitter unleashed the beta version of the Clubhouse, which is an audio-only chat function. Then, early this year, Twitter acquired Breaker – a podcast listening app. This was done with the possible intent of incorporating Breaker’s functionalities for improving Spaces (as Spaces was reported to be buggy in the initial stages).

Breaker can be thought of as a more social way for listening to podcasts, including an updated feed of your connections’ podcast listening habits and liking episodes. The same team working on Breaker is now expected to work on Spaces to transform it into a true and potential podcast listening destination. Twitter will also be eyeing it as a potential rival to Clubhouse, which has been a very famous standalone audio-only chat application.

Twitter has released ‘A 2021 Twitter planner’ for helping marketers plan their content this year.

This editable PDF has a calendar that helps plan for upcoming hashtag international and national holidays or events. However, it won’t integrate with the tools you are already using, as it is just a PDF.

Twitter took ‘New Year, New Me’ too seriously 😀

Twitter has finally decided that it’s time for a revamp after five years since its last rebranding.

Leslie Berland of Twitter announced that Twitter no longer exemplified the complexity that makes up its users. Keeping that in mind, Twitter has decided on a slightly changed typeface and logo that is meant for reflecting the intentional imperfection of the social media giant.

Twitter has removed the Ads Transparency Center.

The brand has removed its Ads Transparency Center – a feature that was once meant to provide more clarity for those researching advertisements campaigns.

This feature was heavily used and was aimed to provide transparency into issue-related and political advertisements. The Ads Transparency center lost its significance after October 2019, when such advertisements were banned. Therefore, Twitter has decided to sunset it forever!

Twitter has acquired Newsletter Service Revue.

The latest buzz and news about the company is that it has acquired Revue. Revue is a free newsletter service that allows people to publish and create editorial newsletters. This has been an attempt in the direction to help writers ‘monetize their audience’.

The other goal of bringing this free newsletter service under the social media giant’s umbrella is to make it easier for writers to grow by connecting directly with their audience.

Conclusion

So, these were the significant changes and features that you can expect this year from Twitter. The social media company is moving a step closer towards its primary goal by improving the UI, keeping its users safe, and building creative communities to voice their opinions. Time will only tell what else lies in the bag!
